Free Overnight Parking

A compilation of free overnight parking spots, that I’ve used since I started this latest conversion. Use with caution and don’t misuse the privilege!

Some or most of these parking areas are only suitable for vans or very short RV’s. New locations are added as they come along.

Florida

Tampa – Lower Hillsborough Wildlife Preserve

Georgia

Savannah

  • Type: Walmart.
    Directions: I-95 exit 104. Turn right and then first right.
    Remarks: Arrive late, park in a quiet spot and do some shopping. No truck-trailer parking. Strong WiFi signal.

Maryland

Frederick – 70mi NW of Washington DC.

  • Directions: I-70 exit 54 to Hwy 85 South 0.5mi to Guilford Drive, then right.
    Remarks: Arrive late, park in a quiet spot and do some shopping.

Hagerstown

  • Type: Sams Club.
    Directions: From I-70 take I-81 N, immediately right at exit 5A, east 0.5mi, then turn left 0.3mi, turn left again.
    Remarks: Arrive late and park in a quiet spot. Lowes is next door and may have free WiFi.

Appalachian Trail

  • Type: Street side parking.
    Directions: From Hagerstown MD, take I-70 East. At exit 26, take Hwy 40 East. Parking area is on the right, immediately after Hwy 40 crosses the Interstate.
    Remarks: Parking for AT hikers. Access point for the Appalachian Trail. Not suitable for anything larger than a conversion van.

Appalachian Trail

  • Type: Off-street parking.
    Directions: From Frederick MD, take Hwy 40 Alt West 9 miles. Located of left side of the road at ‘South Mountain Inn’.
    Remarks: Parking for AT hikers. Very quiet at this time of year. Access to the Appalachian trail.

Washington Monument State Park – Appalachian Trail:

  • Type: State Park trail parking.
    Directions: From Frederick MD, take Hwy 40 Alt West 9 miles. Turn right at ‘South Mountain Inn’ onto Washington Monument Road 1mi.
    Remarks: Just after the entrance, but before the pay boxes, turn left onto the trail parking. Stay parked here for a few days, while hiking the AT. Log in at the trail register. Restrooms are available to dump the content of your portable toilet/cassette (no dumping station). Drinking water tap at the rear of the restrooms.

Tennessee

Knoxville

  • Type: Walmart.
    Directions: I-75/I-40 exit 379. Keep straight 1000ft, left on Walker Springs Rd 0.25mi, turn right.
    Remarks: Arrive late, park in a quiet spot and do some shopping.

Ontario, Canada

OnRoute rest areas along the main thoroughfares:

  • Type: Rest areas.
    Remarks: Convenient overnight parking. Quite busy and loud, but easy and free WiFi. During the summer months, most have separate, parklike picnic areas with restrooms, but no overnight parking here.
